Used in agriculture as a straight nitrogen fertilizer or as a nitrogen-containing component for fertilizer blends. Ammonium nitrate is produced by reacting gaseous ammonia with non-concentrated nitric acid, followed by evaporation. It is manufactured only with conditioning additives.

SAFETY

Ammonium nitrate is a low-hazard substance. It is an oxidizer capable of supporting combustion and is a fire hazard. If contaminated with organic materials or in a severe fire, decomposition of ammonium nitrate may turn into an explosion.

PACKAGING, TRANSPORT AND STORAGE

Ammonium nitrate is packed in welded polyethylene bags, glued polyethylene bags, and five- or six-layer laminated paper bags of grades PM, BMP and VMP.

Bagged ammonium nitrate is transported by all modes of transport except air, in covered vehicles.

Ammonium nitrate packed in polyethylene is stored in covered, dry and clean warehouses that protect the product from moisture. Product packed in paper bags or stored in bulk is kept in warehouses with controlled temperature (not more than 30°C) and air humidity (not more than 50%).

PRODUCTION

The production method is based on direct synthesis of urea from liquid ammonia and carbon dioxide, followed by distillation of the urea melt.

APPLICATION

Carbamide is intended for industry in the production of plastics, adhesives and resins, and for agriculture as a fertilizer and feed additive, as well as for retail trade.

PACKAGING, TRANSPORT AND STORAGE

Carbamide intended for industry is transported in bulk by agreement with the customer. Carbamide intended for animal husbandry is transported only in packaged form. It may be packed in valve-type laminated woven polymer bags or valve-type woven polymer bags with a liner to applicable specifications, or in imported bags. Net weight 50 kg.

Bulk carbamide is transported in covered self-unloading “mineral carrier” wagons or in covered rail cars whose doorways must additionally be closed with protective shields.

Carbamide may also be packed in five- or six-layer paper bags or laminated bags (the inner paper layer in contact with the product must be unimpregnated) or in welded polyethylene bags.

Carbamide must be stored in closed dry warehouses that protect the product from moisture.

When stored in bulk, mixing of carbamide with other fertilizers is not allowed.

Carbamide is non-toxic and, under normal conditions, fire- and explosion-safe.

Nitrophoska is intended for agriculture and retail trade as a fertilizer.

PRODUCTION METHOD

Nitric-sulfuric acid process using nitric and sulfuric acids to decompose apatite.

TOXICITY AND SAFETY REQUIREMENTS

Nitrophoska is non-toxic and a fire hazard. It belongs to the group of combustible substances. An airborne dust of nitrophoska is not explosive.

Nitrophoska is prone to cigar-like burning from local heat sources with a temperature of 110°C.

TRANSPORT AND STORAGE

Packed in five-layer paper bags of grades BM, PM and BMP with a mass of about 50 kg ± 1 kg.

For retail trade it is packed in film bags of 1 to 3 kg. The bags are then packed in paper or polyethylene sacks; net weight of the secondary package is not more than 15 kg.

Bulk transport of nitrophoska in special wagons is permitted.

Stored in closed warehouses, protected from moisture.

Storage in piles of up to 5,000 tonnes is permitted.

Joint storage with single and double superphosphate and potassium salt is prohibited.

Nitrophoska is a compound fertilizer containing three primary plant nutrients: nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. It is a slightly hygroscopic product from pink to reddish in color, with granule size from 1 to 4 mm.

Nitrophoska is packed in five-layer paper or polyethylene bags and transported by any covered transport.

Bulk transport in special all-metal wagons is also possible.

Stored in closed warehouses, protected from moisture.

GOST 6221-90

It is a product of catalytic synthesis of a nitrogen-hydrogen mixture using an iron catalyst SA-S at 400–530°C and a pressure of 23.0–30.0 MPa.

The feedstocks are natural gas and nitrogen contained in air.

Note. A water mass fraction of less than 0.2% is allowed in liquid ammonia of grade Ak transported in tank cars and of grade B, with adjustment to 0.2–0.4% at port plants.

APPLICATION

Liquid ammonia is used as a feedstock for nitric acid, ammonium nitrate, urea, nitrophoska and ammonium sulfate. It is also used as a refrigerant in a number of industrial processes and for creating protective atmospheres.

SAFETY REQUIREMENTS

At normal temperature and atmospheric pressure ammonia is gaseous.

It is a combustible gas. Minimum autoignition temperature is 650°C.

Explosive limits in a mixture with air are 15 to 28 volume fractions of NH3. At atmospheric pressure it liquefies at −33.4°C. It is toxic and, in accordance with GOST 12.1.007-76, belongs to hazard class 4.

TRANSPORT

in specially equipped road and rail tank cars. The main hazards during transport are tank depressurization due to faulty fittings, incorrect filling, or failure to observe the rules for transporting dangerous goods.

— CONCENTRATED NITRIC ACID
GOST 701-89, grades A and B

The production method is based on concentrating 55% nitric acid using a 72–76% magnesium nitrate melt as a dehydrating agent in concentration columns.

Grade “A” nitric acid is used in the manufacture of products for the radio-electronics industry, in nitration of organic compounds, in explosives production, in chemical treatment of metals, in the pharmaceutical industry, in plastics production and for other purposes.

Grade “B” nitric acid is used for electroplating, in the production of chemical reagents, for dissolving impurities in industrial products, in nitration of organic compounds, in explosives production and for other purposes.

Concentrated nitric acid is a non-flammable but fire-hazardous liquid and a strong oxidizer. Contact with many materials can cause them to ignite spontaneously. Nitric acid vapors are 2.2 times heavier than air. Concentrated nitric acid and nitrogen oxides are moderately hazardous by toxicity. Maximum permissible concentration is 2 mg/m³ (hazard class 3 according to GOST 12.1.007-76).

Concentrated nitric acid is filled into special aluminum tank cars and aluminum drums manufactured to approved technical documentation.

When shipped in rail tank cars, the tanks are filled to 90% of their volume.

Filling hatches of tank cars and drum necks must be carefully sealed with gaskets made of material resistant to concentrated nitric acid (fluoroplastic).

Before filling tank cars, if the residual heel exceeds 10 cm, it must be analyzed for compliance with the standard. Small customers receive strong nitric acid in the customer’s containers made of aluminum grades A-99 or A-85 and stainless steel grade EP 794.

— REAGENT NITRIC ACID

APPLICATION

Used in the printing industry, in the production of pharmaceuticals and as a reagent.

PRODUCTION

Obtained by absorbing in water the nitrous gases formed during oxidation of ammonia with atmospheric oxygen in the presence of a catalyst.

TRANSPORT AND STORAGE

Reagent acid is filled and transported in 20-liter glass bottles placed in polyethylene drums. The product is stored in covered warehouses. Joint storage and transport of nitric acid with organic substances, flammable liquids and combustible materials is not allowed.

APPLICATION

SAFETY REQUIREMENTS

By toxicity, nitric acid belongs to hazard class 3.

PACKAGING, TRANSPORT AND STORAGE

Non-concentrated nitric acid is filled into glass bottles with ground glass or ceramic stoppers, into tightly closed stainless-steel vessels and into tank cars.

Nitric acid is transported by all modes of transport except air.

It is a product of multi-stage distillation of technical concentrated nitric acid with washing of acid vapors by reflux, their condensation and subsequent dilution to the required concentration with double-distilled water in quartz-glass equipment.

APPLICATION

High-purity nitric acid is used in the production of semiconductors, radio-electronic equipment, metals and alloys, catalysts, ion-exchange resins, lasers and rare elements, and for precision scientific research.

SAFETY

High-purity nitric acid of grades 27-4, 27-5 and 33-4 is a colorless or slightly yellowish liquid with a pungent odor. When heated it decomposes with the release of nitrogen oxides.

PACKAGING, TRANSPORT AND STORAGE

High-purity nitric acid is filled into 20-liter glass bottles and immediately closed with a stopper. The glass bottles are placed in polyethylene drums.

Transported by all modes of transport. Bottles of high-purity nitric acid are stored in simple dark warehouses separately from other reagents at a temperature not exceeding 30°C.

Synthetic hydrochloric acid is filled into special rubber-lined rail tank cars of 50–60 t capacity.

According to GOST 12.1.044-89 the product is non-combustible and belongs to hazard class III. Production premises must be equipped in accordance with GOST 12.4.021-75, SNiP 2.04.05-86 and GOST 2874-82.

TRANSPORT AND STORAGE

Off-gas hydrochloric acid is packed in steel rubber-lined containers (tanks) and in polymer drums sealed with rubber gaskets.

Transported in tank trucks or in drums in covered rail cars, as wagon-load or small shipments.

Stored in hermetic steel rubber-lined or enameled tanks in covered premises.

Melange is used in the manufacture of nitrating mixtures, intermediates and synthetic dyes.

PRODUCTION

Obtained by mixing concentrated nitric and sulfuric acids in melange reactors in the ratio HNO3:H2SO4 = 1:12.7–12.9.

Acid mixed acid is poisonous, causes severe burns of the skin and mucous membranes, and its vapors irritate the respiratory tract. It is a strong oxidizer, infinitely soluble in water and toxic.

TRANSPORT AND STORAGE

Acid mixed acid is transported in clean rail tank cars, model 15-1514, made of stainless or carbon steel. Filling hatches must be carefully sealed. Before filling, the residual mixed acid must be analyzed for compliance with the standard. Tanks are marked “DANGER” and “MELANGE”.

Stored in stainless-steel vessels with acid-resistant lining.

Guaranteed shelf life by nitrogen oxides mass fraction: from 15 April to 15 October — 1 month; at other times of the year — 2 months from the date of manufacture.

APPLICATION

Gaseous nitrogen is intended to create an inert atmosphere in the production, storage and transport of easily oxidized products, in high-temperature processes and in the treatment of metals that do not react with nitrogen, and for mothballing closed metal vessels and pipelines. In industry it is used in nitriding reactions and as a feedstock for ammonia production.

SAFETY REQUIREMENTS

Nitrogen is non-toxic and non-explosive. It causes asphyxiation and oxygen deficiency. Liquid nitrogen is a low-boiling liquid and causes frostbite of the skin and damage to the mucous membrane of the eyes. If the oxygen content in liquid nitrogen rises (up to 30% by volume), fire- and explosion-hazardous mixtures with organic substances may form.

Of liquid and gaseous technical nitrogen and high-purity nitrogen according to GOST 26460-85.

Technical gaseous nitrogen of the highest grade is supplied only by pipeline.

During prolonged storage and under sunlight it polymerizes, forming a solid glass-like polymer insoluble in water, acids, alkalis and organic solvents. TGM-3 is filled into 250 L aluminum drums and into aluminum rail tank cars of types 17 and 20 with top discharge, capacity 38 tonnes.

Intended for the manufacture of articles by extrusion, calendering, pressing, rolling and injection molding. Suspension polyvinyl chloride is a product of suspension polymerization of vinyl chloride.

SAFETY

By its effect on the human body, suspension PVC belongs to moderately hazardous substances of class 3. When heated above 150°C it partially decomposes with the release of hydrogen chloride and carbon monoxide.

Maximum permissible concentration of PVC dust in the air of the working area is 6 mg/m³.

The base dust is a fire hazard.

Intended for the manufacture of gramophone records and other purposes. Copolymer grade VA-15 is a product of joint suspension polymerization of vinyl chloride with vinyl acetate.

SAFETY

By the degree of effect on the body, copolymer VA-15 according to GOST 12.1.005-88 belongs to class IV (low-hazard substance). On direct contact it does not affect the skin or the mucous membranes of the eyes. Above 60°C copolymer VA-15 softens; melting point is above 110°C; decomposition temperature is (120±15)°C.

Copolymer VA-15 is a combustible substance. Ignition temperature 310°C, autoignition temperature 468°C. Dust-air mixtures are explosion-safe. On contact with water, acids, alkalis and atmospheric oxygen it does not burn and is explosion-safe.

PACKAGING, TRANSPORT AND STORAGE

Copolymer VA-15 is packed according to GOST 2226-88 in four- or five-layer bags of grade PM. Bag mass must be 20±0.2 kg. Bagged copolymer is transported in closed trucks or covered rail cars. By agreement with the customer, copolymer VA-15 may be transported in special rail tanks.

Stored in a closed room excluding sunlight, at least 1 m from heating appliances.

Storage temperature must be from 5 to 35°C.

DMT is packed in 4–6-layer paper bags with a polyethylene liner and transported in covered vehicles, palletized or without palletizing.

Used as an intermediate for many industrial syntheses. The main consumer is the production of formaldehyde and synthetic rubber. Methanol is also used in the production of dimethyl terephthalate and dimethyl methacrylate, pesticides and crop-protection chemicals, acetic acid, urotropine, urea resins, photographic film and dyes, and in the gas industry to dissolve hydrate deposits in pipelines, as well as for other purposes.

SAFETY REQUIREMENTS

Methanol is a colorless, highly flammable poisonous liquid with a flash point of 8°C and an autoignition temperature of 436°C. Flammability limits are 6.7–34.7 vol.%. TRANSPORTED in specially allocated rail tank cars.

SAFETY

Chlorine is a highly hazardous substance. With hydrogen it forms explosive mixtures. In case of chlorine poisoning, leave the contaminated atmosphere and drink milk with soda.

Intended for the chemical, petrochemical and pulp-and-paper industries and for non-ferrous metallurgy.

SAFETY REQUIREMENTS
CAUSTIC SODA is a corrosive substance. Contact with the skin causes chemical burns. It belongs to harmful substances of hazard class 2. All work with caustic soda must be carried out only in protective clothing. If caustic soda gets on the skin or workwear, the affected areas must be immediately washed with a stream of water or saline solution.

Liquid caustic soda is filled into specially allocated rail tank cars of 60 t capacity.

Filling into the customer’s containers is also possible.

A product of chlorination of an aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide.

APPLICATION

Sodium hypochlorite is used in the chemical industry for disinfection of drinking water and swimming-pool water, for disinfection of territories and for bleaching of fabrics.

Obtained by dissolving lime calcium with synthetic hydrochloric acid, followed by purification of the resulting solution with milk of lime and drying in spray dryers with flue gases.

APPLICATION

Technical calcium chloride is used as a refrigerant in refrigeration plants, for special purposes, to obtain metallic calcium, in medicine, construction, the manufacture of building materials and for other purposes.

PACKAGING AND STORAGE

Calcium chloride is packed in soft specialized containers MKR-1.

Packing in galvanized drums is possible but undesirable because of metal shortage.

PRODUCTION METHOD for polyvinyl chloride linoleum on a heat- and sound-insulating backing by applying a middle PVC layer onto a printed PVC film and then laminating it with a heat- and sound-insulating backing (with simultaneous thermal gelling of the middle layer) by a contact method.

The face layer is a PVC film with a printed pattern.

The bottom layer of the linoleum is a nonwoven needle-punched material.

APPLICATION

Linoleum is intended for floor covering in residential and public buildings.

PACKAGING AND TRANSPORT

Linoleum rolls are wrapped in 2 layers of wrapping paper and tied with twine. Linoleum is transported in covered vehicles or universal containers, as well as by road.

Liquid nitrogen fertilizers (UAN solutions) are a mixture of aqueous solutions of urea — CO(NH2)2 — 32–38% and ammonium nitrate — NH4NO3 — 41–47%, in which nitrogen is present in three forms: ammoniacal, nitrate and amide.

PACKAGING, TRANSPORT AND STORAGE

General-purpose rail tank cars are used to transport UAN solutions. UAN is stored in collectors and storage tanks of carbon or alloy steel with tightly closed hatches to prevent ingress of foreign bodies, dust and precipitation.
